It is on front page of CodeGear web-site – “More then 3.2M developers use CodeGear tools worldwide“.

Is it a big number? yes.

Is is significant number? well, this is the number of developers for ALL CG tools (unique license/developer, I assume, for JBuilder, Delphi, 3rdRail, Delphi for PHP, etc – total of 11 main tools). I do not know what average distribution is right now, but I would think that we can account 1/3 for Delphi family tools.

Wow! 1M+ of us around the world.

[nitpicking]
shouldn’t that be “more than”?
[/nitpicking]

Also, since we havn’t got a clue how they got these numbers, it might well be that they counted all product licenses they ever sold, including Turbo Pascal, all versions of Delphi, JBuilder, C++Builder, Kylix… And don’t forget there was a Borland C compiler for OS/2 as well. If that’s true, I have been counted 10 times, which does not even include my licenses on free downloads like the Turbo Explorer products (I got them all) and Delphi 7 personal.

So, what does this number mean? Nothing really.

Yes, we all know how marketing works…
It says “developers”, it does not say “licenses”. So I would assume that those are licensed users, since each license has to be associated with the name or company. And since “tools” is used, then a tool and not a version are counted.
Same time, if one is using 5 tools, then he is a developer for 5 different “markets” to be accounted for.

As of August, 2007, the Delphi numbers are closer to 1.75 million unique license holders.

Thank you, Bruce. Nice addition, but with one assertion – this number is for 2006. August 2007 is a date of the post.
We all know how it goes.

So Michael was quoting 2006 numbers? I’d LOVE to see the latest ones.

Quote: “Delphi has a developer population of approx 1.75 million users worldwide in 2006.”

Yup, I got that, but not until you pointed it out and I re-read the post. Whoops.

How on earth would a company derive a statistic like that? I have purchased Turbo Delphi Professional and registered it, yet I have never had any audit questions to determine if I am a developer. It is only sensible to assume that the statistic is based on licensed desks and if that is the case it is going to be a delusional over estimate of reality.

As a new user of Delphi I can attest that the lack of a structured teaching facility and a virtual absence of tutorial books makes it so hard for a beginner to become a developer, that most of those licenses simply languish gathering dust. I would be surprised if 1% is even a realistic estimate of developer use, so 17 thousand is a more probable estimate of the impoverished state of Delphi and that number is surely on the decline as new developers fail to fill the shoes of those leaving for any number of reasons.

From the outside looking in, Delphi is ‘ring fenced’ against access from new blood by its complexity (yes also read power) and lack of structured tuition. 30 Camtasia videos hardly does it for a realistic Developer Training Package.

The latest blog post from Atanas Popov refers to more than 300,000 Delphi developers in the world. So much for the true believers, like Bruce, who thought there really were millions of users.

Much happened since 2008. People moved on to different tech. While there are still people developing in Delphi, it is very niche product these days.
